Amwell Group Practise, Islington, London

Amwell Group Practise Islington London was part of Islington Council’s planning gain for a speculative residential development. The space made available, beneath the newly completed flats, was a deep-plan shell at street level. The design maximises opportunities to bring natural light into the centre of the surgery by arranging public and circulation areas around glazed courtyards. Consulting rooms, at the rear of the building, are lit from a narrow, landscaped court. An openable rooflight supplements the day-light in each of these rooms and also provides natural ventilation.

The limited external envelope of the space, combined with a relatively large plan area, necessitated the use of an air handling system which, together with other service requirements, demanded a high level of co-ordination. Materials and fittings are generally of high quality, chosen for their durability and aesthetic value.

In June 2004 the Prime Minister and Health Secretary chose the surgery as the venue from which to launch the government’s new healthcare plan.
